FROM AIRLINE PASSENGER TO AUTHOR

by H. Pan

For more than ten years, I’ve been flying.  A lot.

I’m not talking about two or three hour flights, but ten, twelve, fourteen or even more hours, from Dubai to Rio, or Singapore to Newark, for example.  At first it was really neat, but after a few years, I came to the realization that there are only so many hours of emails, office work, reading, sleep and even binge watching movies a person can stand in one go.  So I thought, what else can I do on an airplane that could be both creative and productive?

WRITE A BOOK

Write a book, I thought.  I’ve never done it before, but always wanted to and thought perhaps I could.

As a kid, I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, but strayed away from it after college.  So I thought I would go back to my roots, and write a science fiction / fantasy novel.  After doing some research, I discovered a typical fiction novel is usually between 70,000 to 90,000 words.

So I started.  The first five thousand words probably took me two years because I made the novice mistake of re-writing the first two chapters over and over again until I thought they were perfect, only to start re-writing again the next time I got on a plane in search of an even more advanced state of perfection.  Over the next several years, I managed to bring the word count up to 50,000, but in the last two years, I really made significant strides and as of September 2019, I crossed 90,000 words and have only two more chapters left, according to my current outline.

My brother, who has been my biggest supporter, has thrown down the gauntlet and told me he thinks I should finish the book before the end of the year, and I think he’s right.

LAUNCH TEAM

What I’m looking for now is a launch team.  This is anyone who can read and would be interested in coming along for the last part of the ride.  I’ll seek your input on the story so far, ask for your opinion on any plot holes I may have missed or if I failed to explain something properly, and circulate book cover designs for your consideration, and ask you to share the final part of my journey as I finish and self-publish this book.

If any of this even sounds remotely interesting to you, here’s what I propose.  Sign up for my launch team now, or if you prefer to have a taste first, visit my website http://thepowerofli.com, where I’ve posted the first six chapters of my book, and have a read.  If you like it enough, there will be links on the website for you to join the launch team.  I’ll then send you all the chapters I’ve written so far, and gratefully ask for your input from time to time.

If you’re not interested in joining the launch team, that’s ok too.  But if you know anyone who’s interesting in science fiction / fantasy, or would be interested in joining this launch team, please feel free to pass this message on to them as well.

Thanks for your time,

H. Pan
